Yesterday evening at approximately 5:19 PM, Irondequoit Fire District, along with our mutual aid partners from St. Paul Fire Department, Ridge Road Fire District, and Point Pleasant Fire Department, responded to a reported house fire in the district.
First arriving crews confirmed a working fire in a two-story residential home with smoke showing from the structure. Firefighters quickly located and extinguished the fire in the kitchen area while simultaneously conducting searches to ensure all occupants were safely out of the home.
During those searches, firefighters rescued one dog and two cats from the structure. The dog was found unconscious and barely breathing. Firefighters and Irondequoit Ambulance personnel immediately began oxygen therapy and resuscitation efforts using specialized pet rescue equipment. Thanks to the quick actions of responders, the puppy responded well and was alert and acting normally by the end of the incident.
This successful rescue was made possible in part by recent animal rescue training completed by Irondequoit firefighters, led by Dr. Sam Kalis of Irondequoit Animal Hospital, as well as pet oxygen masks and equipment donated through the Fetch Foundation.
The fire was brought under control within approximately 15 minutes. While the fire damage was largely contained to the kitchen area, the home sustained significant smoke and water damage throughout and is currently uninhabitable. Four residents were displaced and are being assisted by the American Red Cross.
Smoke detectors inside the home played an important role in alerting neighbors, who reported seeing and smelling smoke while hearing the alarms sounding.
We would like to thank Irondequoit Police Department, Irondequoit Ambulance, and all assisting mutual aid agencies for their support and teamwork during this incident.
